Petrified Wood

Wood is petrified when it is covered with ash or sand soon after it dies. Water with a lot of silica in it seeps into the wood and the silica is left. Often it is in the form of agate or opal. It is found in many parts of the world. Arizona is noted for beautiful petrified wood.
